The cut-to-length solar cell business has its reasons. This phenomenon emerged following the improvement of the photovoltaic business. While it initially served to reduce the industry’s production costs, the technology eventually evolved to also offer the mobility and flexibility needed in the process of developing customized products such as device powering and is now widely used for manufacturing mini solar panels in large-scale IoT devices.
Cell cutting is now considered one of the most efficient ways to make a solar product tailored to customers’ needs in terms of shape, power and price. Back contact cells, monocrystalline or polycrystalline, cells with 2, 3, 4 or 5 busbars, cells of different colors can be cut into almost any shape using a precision laser to create custom solar panels.
Depending on your technical specifications, we can manufacture solar cells of any shape and size. We use very high precision laser machines to cut solar cells, so that the cutting result is perfect and the edges of the cells are flawless. This detail is essential in order not to damage the PN junction structure of the solar cells and thus guarantee the minimum loss of efficiency due to cutting. In addition to this, the laser cutting process guarantees very low or no wastage.
MR WATT is able to produce custom solar cells of all sizes that can be obtained from standard size solar cells, polycrystalline, monocrystalline or semi-flexible Sunpower solar cells.

Small solar cells are used to obtain photovoltaic panels of higher voltages for the same surface area. After a solar cell is laser cut, the voltage of each individual part remains the same as the original size solar cell, but the current produced will be proportional to the current of the original cells and will depend linearly on the area of the cell. The larger the cell area, the greater the current produced.

MR WATT is capable of producing custom solar cells from virtually every format obtainable from standard 6 “x6” (156×156 mm) or 5 “x5” (125×125 mm) standard solar cells to smaller solar cells. Most solar cells on the market today are made of monocrystalline and polycrystalline silicon wafers. Among monocrystalline cells, Sunpower’s semi-flexible solar cells can be found to be characterized by high efficiency, semiflexibility and the fact that both poles are located at the back of the solar cell (back contact).
MR WATT can even cut colored solar cells!
Taking a classic polycrystalline or monocrystalline solar cell of 156×156 mm (6 “x6” inches) size as an example, it could be cut without waste into smaller dimensions, typically 3 “x6”, 2 “x6”, 1 “x6”, 3 “x3”, 3 “x2”, 3 “x1” (size in inches). Solar cells originally produced in 6 “x6” format are available with 2, 3, 4 or 5 connection lines defined as connecting rods (this is not the case for Sunpower solar cells which have posts only on the back side), so the design of the cut cells may vary according to the positioning of the strips on the solar cells. Monocrystalline solar cells of 125×125 mm are also available.

Examples of standard solar cells cut to size:
A different approach is required for Sunpower solar cells (125x125mm and 161x161mm). These solar cells have the characteristic of having the poles only on the back and on opposite sides. This forces to make cuts only in one direction and to force one side of the solar cell to 125 mm.
